Afghanite is an
aluminum silicate mineral, a feldspathoid that typically occurs with sodalite
group minerals. It forms blue to colorless crystals, typically massive, and has
a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6. Discovered in 1968 in Afghanistan in the
Lapis-lazuli Mine, Sar-e-Sang, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, it takes its
name from that country. It has also been found in Germany, Italy, Tajikistan,
Russia, Newfoundland and the United States. This rare gem is a transparent
light blue color, weighs 0.6ct, and is the first afghanite in the National Gem
Collection.
