Gem corundum, including ruby and sapphire, can be synthesized by a variety of processes for both gem and industrial use. The first experiments in corundum synthesis took place in the mid-nineteenth century, and today corundum of all colors is manufactured using these processes.

Star corundum, which exhibits a six-rayed star pattern when cut as a cabochon, has been synthesized since the late 1940s.
