The 60-Second Gemstone Care Test: Is Your Jewelry at Risk?

Take 60 seconds before your next cleaning session. If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, your gemstone jewelry may need gentler care.

1. Do you use an ultrasonic cleaner for every stone?

Ultrasonic cleaners are not universal. Fracture-filled, heavily included, or coated stones can be vulnerable. When in doubt, use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush—or ask a jeweler.

2. Do you wear rings while applying perfume, lotion, or sanitizer?

Residue can dull a gem’s sparkle and build up around settings. Put jewelry on last and take it off before skincare or household work.

3. Do you store every piece together?

Hard gems such as diamond can scratch softer gems. Separate pouches or a lined jewelry box help prevent accidental damage.

4. Do you clean pearls like diamonds?

Never. Pearls and coral are organic materials: wipe them gently with a soft damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals, heat, and ultrasonic cleaning.

5. Do you assume every blue stone is a sapphire?

Blue gems have different hardness, treatments, and care needs. Knowing the species matters before you clean, polish, or resize a piece.

Fast safe-care routine

  • Remove jewelry before exercise, swimming, gardening, and cleaning.
  • Use a soft cloth after wearing.
  • Store pieces separately.
  • Have prongs and clasps checked regularly.

Important: This is general guidance, not a substitute for advice on a specific valuable gem or antique piece. Ask a qualified jeweler or gemologist when unsure.
