What Is Pezzottaite? The Pink Gem Once Called Raspberry Beryl

Pezzottaite is a pink gem mineral connected to the beryl group. Early material was sold under names such as raspberry beryl, but testing showed that the name did not fully describe the mineral. Its story is a good example of why a new colour does not automatically mean a new gem variety. What made the material unusual? SSEF’s 2004 report discusses samples from Madagascar and material reportedly from Afghanistan. The researchers noticed optical and density values that differed from ordinary beryl. Chemical and crystal-structure studies then showed the importance of caesium and lithium. The mineral was approved as pezzottaite in 2003 and named for mineralogist Federico Pezzotta. Although related to beryl, it is a distinct mineral species. The crystal structure matters just as much as the attractive pink colour.
